Elementary School Injury Prevention Toolkit

What is the ESIP Toolkit?

The Injury Prevention Centre, with the support of Forbes Bros., has developed this toolkit to help elementary educators teach the importance of injury prevention in alignment with the Alberta Education Curriculum.

The purpose of this toolkit is to provide elementary school teachers in Alberta with the resources they need to teach their students about the importance of safety and injury prevention. Development of the resource considered the information from an environmental scan conducted by the Injury Prevention Centre.1 The scan summarized the research regarding characteristics of effective elementary injury prevention resources including using developmentally-specific resources for different age groups, focusing on a variety of interactive activities, incorporating measures for evaluating changes in knowledge, and building partnerships with other injury prevention advocates. Additionally, a literature review was conducted to identify best practises to achieve learning, attitude, and behaviour change among elementary school children in Alberta. Based on the review, the toolkit identifies alignment with the Alberta curriculum, incorporates learning activities for kinesthetic, auditory, visual, and social learners, and uses fun, inquiry-based learning activities.2

About the Injury Prevention Centre

The Injury Prevention Centre (IPC) has supported organizations, communities, and individuals to take actions to reduce their risk of injury for over 20 years in Alberta. Often in partnership, we have initiated and implemented province-wide evidence-informed initiatives, programs, and advocacy efforts. By focusing on preventing injuries, we save lives and keep Albertans out of emergency rooms and hospital beds. We work as connectors, providers, and leaders committed to our vision of ensuring that “Albertans work and play hard, free from life-limiting injuries.”

IPC is part of the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta. Our core funding is from Alberta Health. Development of the Elementary School Injury Prevention Toolkit has been possible due to the generous support of Forbes Brothers.
