About this module

About this Module

The objective of this toolkit is to improve the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours of children; to create a mindset where children make healthy life choices and reduce their risk of life altering injuries. The belief is that children will apply these lessons as they become adults, parents, workers, and community members.

Curriculum Alignment

To ensure this toolkit is a useful resource for teachers, the learning objectives have been designed to align with the Alberta Programs of Study (POS). Links to the learning objectives of each POS will be highlighted so that teachers can easily integrate this module into their lesson plans to satisfy the curriculum requirements in Alberta.

Developmentally-Appropriate

The materials that are included in these lessons have been designed to meet the developmental learning needs of children in Grades 3-4 (Level 2), and include a variety of engaging, interactive experiences. At this developmental stage, while children are still engaged in hands-on learning, opportunities are provided for self-discovery. Children will explore their world and learn to identify injury risks and take actions to reduce their risk in their environment; whether it be in the classroom, on the playground, in the community, or at home.

An evidence-based curriculum was used as a template to develop the content of the toolkit. Where content was appropriate, it was incorporated into the toolkit with permission. For other topic areas, information and resources were drawn from expert organizations and / or was adapted / created to fulfil the learning objectives.
