How to use this toolkit
This toolkit is divided into 3 Levels (Note: this is different from the structure of ‘Divisions’ used by Alberta Education):
- Level 1 covers the curriculum for Grades 1 and 2
- Level 2 covers the curriculum for Grades 3 and 4
- Level 3 covers the curriculum for Grades 5 and 6
Each Level consists of an Introduction outlining the overarching objective, curriculum alignment, developmental appropriateness and content development along with the injury prevention topics of each module. These topics address the most common injuries experienced by elementary school aged children. The toolkit is set up to be flexible. Each module stands alone, enabling you to choose only those injury topics that will be most relevant for your students and allowing you to deliver them in an order that makes sense to you.
Within each module you will find background information on the injury topic, curriculum links, learning objectives, lesson plan, home and community connections, interactive quiz, and additional resources.
The injury topics for each level are:
- Concussions & Other Head Injuries
- Fall Prevention
- Farm Safety
- Fire Safety & Burn Prevention
- Off-road Vehicle Safety
- Poison Prevention
- Sports Safety
- Suffocation, Strangulation, & Choking Prevention
- Traffic Safety
- Water Safety & Drowning Prevention
